Great article Annalise & Cailynn & great pictures Viv! I’ve been birding just over a year. It’s a bit distracting for my piano students with the activity just outside the window....😊 but we have a great close-up view.

Thanks for this! I’ve learned a lot this year just by paying more attention (and staring out my living room window😉).

Enjoyed the article, it directly speaks to my wife and I right now. We have cranked our bird nerd game in our yard to 10 since the initial lockdown (ie. added feeders, bought multiple bags and types of feed, continued adding bookmark’s to Chris’s book). The sparrows are most dominant and they get a bad rap but they’re actually fascinating to watch. The suet feeder has had the biggest payoff; attracts flickers every day (our favourite) but also brings the squirrels and magpies who quickly figured out how to open the suet latch. Downy woodpeckers, nuthatches, chickadees, blue jays also common visitors to the yard and the rabbits also visit to get enjoy what the birds don’t finish. Happy birding!

For those who don't mind paying for data on their smartphone, BirdNET is an app that uses sounds to identify bird species. A team of scientists from Cornell and Chemnitz University in Germany developed the app. I've used it successfully in my neighbourhood in Sherwood Park.

One more thing, if I may, as a "bird nerd": Go without expectation.
